The Story Behind the Story
While I was in the midst of developing my supernatural script, an unexpected opportunity came knocking. Miss Mehnaaz Nadiadwala, my cousin’s friend, whom I had met a few times and had shared my book with, reached out to me. She wanted to collaborate on a short film based on a powerful and urgent message: female foeticide.
She was particularly struck by something I had shared in the preface of my book, a deeply personal experience in which the soul of a child communicates with the mother. She wanted that emotion, that essence, captured in the film. She asked me to write and direct it for her. And that’s how It’s A Girl was born.
The film was introduced by The Times of India and featured on their platform. It also made history by becoming the first short film to be released across PVR theatres in India. Unfortunately, without strong PR or marketing support, it didn’t get the reach or attention it truly deserved, and the recognition I received was modest.
Still, It’s A Girl found its way to success. It won multiple awards, was selected by several festivals, released on Hotstar, and is now also streaming on the Pocket Films channel.
